Canada's Historic Places Initiative
Canada’s
Historic Places Initiative
(HPI) is federal, provincial, and territorial collaboration created in 2000. HPI
has the ultimate goal of creating a culture of
conservation in Canada and, more specifically, it's
strategic outcomes are
-
Canadians feel a greater
sense of connection to each other, their history,
identity and historic place;
-
More historic places are
conserved and “given a function in the life of
communities” (UNESCO) and
-
Historic Places reflect
the diversity of Canada’s heritage
HPI has developed three programs, which include
-
Canadian Register of
Historic Places (www.historicplaces.ca),
which is an online register of historic places
identified across Canada;
-
Standards & Guidelines for the Conservation of
Historic Places, which aims to provide sound,
practical guidance on the preservation,
rehabilitation, and restoration of historic places
and
-
Commercial Heritage
Properties Incentive Fund (CHPIF), which was a grant
program provided to commercial heritage properties.
Secure, ongoing support from the federal government for the
Historic Places Initiative is having a positive impact on the design
and delivery of heritage programs in all provinces and territories.
In British Columbia, HPI funding has enabled the Heritage Branch to
work with local governments to develop
community heritage registers,
to develop the BC Register of Historic
Places, and to support training initiatives to build
community heritage capacity across the province.
